Adult/Teenage Classes

Our workouts are a great way to get in shape. . . . . . .

The great thing about our classes is they are like an exercise programme with a bonus! You learn to defend yourself whilst you get in shape. Also unlike some aerobics lessons you will never feel out of place as everyone works at their own individual pace.

Wune Tang Academy understand that most people have never undertaken a martial arts class. Our Instructors are patient, professional and totally committed to your progress. Focus on weight control, personal growth, new friendships, toning, physical fitness and flexibility. We know how hard it can be to make that first step and we promise you that you will feel very ‘at home’ from your first session with us!

Strong Discipline is not just for children! ...

Single Sex or Mixed Sex Classes for sparring. . . . . . .

There are pros and cons for both. Some women are happier training with their gender, typically ladies that need their confidence gaining. Others prefer to work out against a male partner. After all, she has perhaps more to fear from a male attacker than a female one. Choose what suits you is the message here!

Physiologically speaking a woman has a lower power-to weight ratio than a man, her bones are less dense - and they become markedly less dense after she passes fifty years of age. She has to make up for this lack of a biological sledgehammer by using pinpoint accuracy to hit the groin, the nose, the throat etc. She produces testosterone, like the male does but not in such high amounts relative to body mass. She can become aggressive - given the right circumstances (like defense of her child) though the average female’s biology is set more towards flight than fight.

There are few Hannibal Lecters in this world (thank God!) and the average guy who attacks a woman does so on the spur of the moment. She walks past; he grabs her. He probably isn’t a skilled fighter so much as a fairly average Joe with an overactive sex drive. So it is possible that our Lara Croft wannabe probably has more practical fighting ability than he has. And providing (and that’s a BIG PROVIDING) she can go beyond paralysis and straight into action, he’s going to pick up a shin across the jaw.

So by and large, the practical training of karate is going to quickly make the average female better at sparring and hence, self defense, than the untrained average female. The only thing to watch out for is over-confidence and the girl who never spars and works out in an all-female club may have a rude awakening when she throws her best shot, sees it connect and then sees the guy nod approvingly before he steps in, forewarned, to rip her arms off. At some stage she is going to have to work out with large males and the best gift he can give her is the feel of a heavy punch to her solar plexus, because so many women are shocked to a standstill when they take that first heavy punch.

So the suggestion is: Train at an all female class, however if you want to be able to fight males, then learn how to spar with them.
